What is LIA? expand_more expand_less

LIA means Lärande i Arbete, or Learning in a Work Environment. It is a workplace-based course within Swedish Higher Vocational Education.

Is a LIA student employed by the organisation? expand_more expand_less

No. LIA is part of the student’s education and does not constitute employment.

Does the organisation pay the student? expand_more expand_less

LIA is normally unpaid because it is an educational course rather than employment. Any questions about compensation or practical arrangements should be discussed with Hyper Island before the placement begins.

How long is a LIA period? expand_more expand_less

The duration varies between programs and cohorts. Hyper Island’s current periods range from 18 to 28 weeks.

What kind of assignments can the student complete? expand_more expand_less

Assignments should be relevant to the student’s program, occur in a real professional environment and give the student opportunities to work towards the LIA course goals.

Must the student work on site? expand_more expand_less

The setup may differ depending on the organisation and program. A remote or hybrid arrangement must still provide genuine participation in a professional environment, regular supervision, access to colleagues and suitable conditions for reaching the course goals.

Who can be a supervisor? expand_more expand_less

The supervisor should have relevant professional experience and sufficient insight into the student’s work. The person should also have time to introduce, guide and provide feedback to the student.

How much time does supervision require? expand_more expand_less

The amount varies, but the supervisor should be available for a proper introduction, regular check-ins, ongoing feedback and final assessment input. The student should also have access to relevant colleagues during everyday work.

Who grades the student? expand_more expand_less

Hyper Island is responsible for grading. The workplace supervisor provides information about the student’s performance in relation to the course.

Are students insured? expand_more expand_less

Students completing approved LIA in Sweden are generally covered through the applicable student insurance arrangements. Hyper Island should confirm the coverage for each placement, particularly for international placements or unusual working arrangements.

Can we host more than one student? expand_more expand_less

Yes, provided that each student receives suitable assignments, access to a relevant professional environment and sufficient supervision.

Are we expected to employ the student afterwards? expand_more expand_less

No. There is no requirement to offer employment. LIA can, however, provide both parties with an opportunity to explore a possible future working relationship.

What happens if the organisation changes during the placement? expand_more expand_less

Contact Hyper Island immediately. Changes to supervision, assignments, workload or organisational conditions may affect the student’s ability to meet the course goals and should be reviewed promptly.

Who should we contact? expand_more expand_less

Complete the LIA enquiry form and select the relevant program. The appropriate Hyper Island education team will contact you.
