LIA means Lärande i Arbete, or Learning in a Work Environment. It is a workplace-based course within Swedish Higher Vocational Education.
No. LIA is part of the student’s education and does not constitute employment.
LIA is normally unpaid because it is an educational course rather than employment. Any questions about compensation or practical arrangements should be discussed with Hyper Island before the placement begins.
The duration varies between programs and cohorts. Hyper Island’s current periods range from 18 to 28 weeks.
Assignments should be relevant to the student’s program, occur in a real professional environment and give the student opportunities to work towards the LIA course goals.
The setup may differ depending on the organisation and program. A remote or hybrid arrangement must still provide genuine participation in a professional environment, regular supervision, access to colleagues and suitable conditions for reaching the course goals.
The supervisor should have relevant professional experience and sufficient insight into the student’s work. The person should also have time to introduce, guide and provide feedback to the student.
The amount varies, but the supervisor should be available for a proper introduction, regular check-ins, ongoing feedback and final assessment input. The student should also have access to relevant colleagues during everyday work.
Hyper Island is responsible for grading. The workplace supervisor provides information about the student’s performance in relation to the course.
Students completing approved LIA in Sweden are generally covered through the applicable student insurance arrangements. Hyper Island should confirm the coverage for each placement, particularly for international placements or unusual working arrangements.
Yes, provided that each student receives suitable assignments, access to a relevant professional environment and sufficient supervision.
No. There is no requirement to offer employment. LIA can, however, provide both parties with an opportunity to explore a possible future working relationship.
Contact Hyper Island immediately. Changes to supervision, assignments, workload or organisational conditions may affect the student’s ability to meet the course goals and should be reviewed promptly.
Complete the LIA enquiry form and select the relevant program. The appropriate Hyper Island education team will contact you.
